In “Mirrored Journey”, people around the world receive a small mirror by post. The participants are encouraged to share through it reflections of a location, story or idea that are important to themselves or their community.
With this project, we give ourselves (and therefore the audience and all participants) the opportunity to discover unknown places and situations together, to see life from another perspective, to meet new people or to refresh old friendships.
The idea for “Mirrored Journey” arose during a discussion about alternatives to travel and new types of collaboration in a time of global pandemic. Nowadays, hardly any professional group travels as much as artists do. Despite the recent situation, to be somewhere else, to observe and explore still has a high significance in our work, which we nurture since 2020 with a little bit of nostalgia.
Travelling is a process of approaching people. In this case, a travelling mirror is the main bonding element between all involved. By using such, we aim to reach friends and colleagues and wish that they too will pass on and in turn connect with others who will connect with others and so on.
The mirror, an object with a deep symbolic meaning, reflects the existing environment but also distorts it, it can be seen as a window to another space or as a tool for introspection and analysis. As in Lewis Carroll's Alice Through the Looking Glass, we seek to go beyond the surface to reach unknown contexts.
"To get there you have to go through the mirror, not around or behind it, but through it. Remember, though, that it is a reflection, so to get in, you have to get into your own self."
Our wish is to motivate as many people as possible to contact someone they have always wanted to reach but haven't done for a long time. With this project we aim to trigger a randomly growing network, based on friendship and respect.
